"Wishing won't bring them back."

Doctors are expected to perform miracles, but we are not Gods regardless of how some profess to be.

Although we may strive to attain the perfection of ages, we are mortal, of flesh, of blood, and therefore, fallible;

And I, more so than most.

Issei

The last memory she ever had of her parents was of their screams. There was the cries of battle, the roars of triumph, followed by the sick gurgling sound of the dying.

She was an impressionable 8 year old, and she remembers that morning earlier, where her most pressing concern was of how to manipulate her mother into allowing her another few minutes on the swing set. The young girl never did understand why her parents were so adamant to usher her inside during the night. There were countless times that the girl had gazed through the window, at the playground only yards away and thought to herself how silly her parents were to worry about a place so near.

And so that night she stayed.

Despite her parents' rules to the contrary.

And that night they all died.

It was in the moment afterwards, when, with small hands bathed in the crimson of her parent's blood, that she realized her inability to prevent the inevitability of death. That regardless of prayers, lamentations or sobs, the grim specter always comes. For you, for her, for anyone. It was not until years later, after she was fostered in America and her days manifested into the rigorous lifestyle of University, then the tedious complexity of Johns Hopkins Medical School, did she finally accept it.

Blame me for their death

Curse me for my weakness

Do not dare forgive me for what I cannot forgive in myself.

"Please, please forgive me,
But I won't be home again.
Maybe someday you'll look up,
And, barely conscious, you'll say to no one:
"Isn't something missing?"
You won't cry for my absence, I know -
You forgot me long ago.
Am I that unimportant...?
Am I so insignificant...?
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me? "
